This project transforms a typical Canberra duplex through the addition of a garden pavilion created in the tradition of the British conservatory. The pavilion’s circular window and sweeping roof form were inspired by the clients’ love of European art deco.  The new kitchen and living area extend out to a landscaped outdoor entertaining area, providing space for the semi-retired clients to host large gatherings of friends and extended family.

The addition of the conservatory has led to the resolution of the existing dwelling’s ground floor, with the old kitchen being been freed up for use as a large formal dining room that flows out to the new spaces.  The project also includes modifications to the upper floor, including a trafficable glass balcony which doubles as a skylight, an updated bathroom and carefully realigned windows that further add to the amenity and future liveability of the modest semi-detached home.
