Location: Turner ACT
Client: Spacelab/Lockbridge
Year: 2022
Situated in the leafy suburb of Turner on a site once occupied by a single dwelling, the Macleay Street Terraces exemplify a refined approach to the “missing middle” — a gentle transition between suburban homes and the nearby city towers. Designed as a collection of three-storey, mansard-roofed terraces, the project brings a contemporary urban character while maintaining a distinctly human scale.
Each residence is anchored by a robust brick base, giving the development a grounded, tactile presence along the street. Above, a considered mix of façade materials introduces warmth, variation and craftsmanship, enriching the public realm and creating a sense of individuality within the terrace row. Strong street engagement is central to the design: entries, windows and architectural detailing create an active, welcoming frontage that enhances the pedestrian experience.
Internally, skylights and double-height voids draw natural light deep into the homes, offering generosity, spatial delight and moments of vertical connection. A discreetly sunken car court supports a pedestrian-friendly environment at ground level, allowing the architecture — not the cars — to define the character of the place.
The MacLeay Street Terraces deliver thoughtful, humanist housing that sits comfortably between city and suburb, offering contemporary living with soul, texture and enduring appeal.
